Time to dismantle trade barriers: Scindia

Calling upon the developing countries which are fervently adopting protectionist measures in the wake of global recession, Hon’ble Minister of State, Ministry of Commerce and Industry, Shri Jyotiraditya Scindia, said they should rather realign "now" towards vigorous trade activities to recuperate early from the economic slumber. He was speaking in the India MSME Summit held in New Delhi on July 28, 2009.

"In this time of crisis, when there is marked rise of protectionism in the developed countries, what the world needs is more trade not less! If there was any time in history more important to do so, it is now," said Shri Jyotiraditya Scindia in the second Indian MSME Summit.

He reiterated India’s urge to conclude the Doha Round at the earliest. "India is keen to conclude the Doha Round once the developed countries adhere to their commitments made during its outset."

He added that the protectionist policies followed by the countries will only result into delay of recovery process of the global economy. "The developing countries particularly in Asia and Africa need to dismantle more barriers in the way of trade," said Shri Jyotiraditya Scindia speaking at the Summit on ’Trade Opportunities for MSMEs in New Markets’.

The second of its series, the India MSME Summit (the first India MSME Summit was held in New Delhi on February 13, 2009), was organised by The Economic Times in technical partnership with the Federation of Indian Micro and Small & Medium Enterprises (FISME).
