  The FISME Factor

President's Message
Dr. Sangam Kurade, President, FISMEThere are media reports suggesting that Reserve Bank of India is asking Public Sector Banks (PSBs) under prompt corrective action to restrict their new loan exposure. Though apparently the advisory looks applicable to banks such as Dena Bank, Indian Overseas Bank and UCO Bank, knowing the functioning of PSBs and the tone and the tenor of RBI, it is feared that it chilling effect will be felt across all PSBs. That would be disastrous especially for MSMEs who have just started coming out of the double whammy of demonetization and GST. The Government and the RBI have to take steps to ward off the fear psychosis creeping in banking sector. It needs to be ensured that MSMEs’ financial needs whether renewal/ enhancement of working capital limits or sanction of new loans are not affected adversely. "

Rival Amazon was also interested but perhaps lost out because it could have run into trouble with Indian competition regulations. Amazon promptly announced after the Flipkart sale that it would be pumping an additional Rs2,600 crore into its India operations. The past few years have seen the boundary between traditional retail and online commerce dissipate. Companies have tried to provide consumers with an integrated experience.

Every business is financed through a mix of Debt (borrowed funds) and Equity (owned funds) financing. How much of each component should be used depends on the riskiness of the business and availability of funding, besides the relevance of each type. Broadly, Equity is less risky with respect to cash flow commitments but is much more expensive compared to Debt.
