President's Message |
" Towards eradicating the scourge of black money, everybody recommended the bitter pill of demonetization of larger currency notes of 1000 and 500 denominations, but nobody dared administer it during last 38 years! Thus the step taken by Prime Minister Modi is certainly bold. The ‘stockers’ of black money will be affected and while some of it may comeback through the banking system, bulk of the black money held in these notes will be thrown out of the system. But in the short term pains are obvious. Banking operations are strained beyond measure and commercial banking operations are hit as the staff may remain busy exchanging notes for several weeks. Small businesses work in an eco-system- not by choice, that thrives on cash economy. We feel doing business will become more challenging in the short and medium term. But, addressing issue of black money through demonetization is far from sufficient. The machinery that generates black money may remain intact unless it is followed by several steps. Rampant corruption at every level in government and opacity in political funding coupled with ill equipped judicial system is cocktail that may continue to poison Indian social, political and economic life. We wish that the journey that Prime Minister Modi has embarked upon attains success and the fight against corruption is taken to its logical end.
"

Business Banter: Lessons from Entrepreneurs |
In life, it’s a lot easier to just fly under the radar and keep your goals and achievements — and any failures to reach those goals — to yourself. Doing so helps you avoid a lot of embarrassment and judgment.
But when you start a business, you need to market it. You must put yourself out there in a very public way.
Something like 80-percent of businesses fail in the first year, so the odds are pretty stacked against you. And sadly, some people actually are hoping to see you fail — including some of your peers.

The move to withdraw high-denomination notes is expected to dent immediate consumption, especially of high-end goods, but will have a positive impact on growth and inflation in the long run, economists and experts said.
Sectors with a sizeable magnitude of cash transactions such as real estate, construction, jewellery, high-end retail and travel and tourism are expected to get adversely affected.
White goods demand, a source of strength for the economy, is also expected to take a hit, along with that for passenger cars, which could prompt a reassessment of growth estimates for the year.

That midnight shopping spree for gold on Tuesday night and the hurried purchases of luxury goods such as Louis Vuitton bags and watches may not go past the tax radar undetected.
Taxmen are likely to seek details of buyers from sellers of such items in the few days since high-denomination notes were demonetised. “We would be keeping a close watch for any sudden surge in purchase payments,” a senior Central Board of Direct Taxes official said.

The demonetisation of Rs 500 and Rs 1,000 notes will hurt agriculture, informal sector workers about 482 million people who earn cash incomes — and disrupt India’s consumption patterns for at least the next quarter, according to an assessment released last week by Deloitte, an international consulting firm.
In contrast, sectors like e-commerce and payment banks, payment gateways are set to gain as transactions using cashless methods will increase over the coming months, the Deloitte report said, emphasising that “the long-term outlook remains positive”.

All ministries will now have to set up a dedicated task force in each department to track progress on ease of doing business as part of the government’s renewed efforts to improve India’s rank in the World Bank’s Global Doing Business Report, a measure that comes after the country moved up just one spot to 130 in the latest index. A four-pronged approach proposed by the Department of Industrial Policy and Promotion (DIPP) includes holding discussions with the stakeholders and the respondents in the World Bank study on ease of doing business, officials said.
