President's Message |
“The election fever is full-on. Day in and day out, politicians of all hues are making scandalous allegations on each other and promising moon to electorates. Anybody who can think would be deeply scared of the consequences of the omissions and commissions of politicians in the run up to elections. It is not difficult for many citizens especially the elites and the educated class to become cynical in such an environment. But we cannot give up on politics. There is no choice. We have to perform a dharma- a sacred duty, to choose the best leader among the ones on offer and also help others to choose the better person. And, if we are disappointed by all candidates, even then we should exercise our choice of NOTA. We should also give feedback to politicians- they are most receptive during election time, as to what is the right path for country and economy, why MSMEs are important for job creation and how they can be helped to grow. By not voting, we give up the moral right to criticize the politicians.”

Writing on the Wall |
International Monetary Fund (IMF) on Tuesday released its latest take on the prospects for global economic growth. The highlight of its World Economic Outlook is that there is a slowdown in economic activity in 2019 for 70% of the world economy. The bad news is this includes India. Global growth is expected to drop 0.3% this year, to 3.3%. The main reason is trade friction between the world’s largest economies and its cascading impact on business sentiments. Trade friction between the US and China has a negative fallout on the global economy. However, one consequence of the tension is a partial relocation of production sites out of China as multinational companies hedge risks. This is where India has an opportunity to reverse its declining export intensity of growth. Over the last few years India’s share of global merchandise export has been stagnant at about 1.7%. As a proportion of GDP, exports have declined from 17% in 2012 to about 11.9% in 2019. This will slow down the country’s climb towards prosperity.
