President's Message
Dr. Sangam Kurade, President, FISME " One of the biggest challenges confronting India has been providing alternative employment opportunities to almost 12 million people migrating from agriculture every year in search of alternative livelihood opportunities. Studies suggest that during last decade employment in the Corporate sector has actually shrunk primarily because of its emphasis on capital intensive manufacturing. Almost all job opportunities created were in the unorganized sector. Still, policies continue to provide fiscal incentives for more investment by the Corporate sector and nothing is offered to MSMEs who are actually creating jobs. A few weeks, on the behest of the Prime Minister’s Office, Prof. Bibek Debroy, Member NITI Aayog, had an exclusive meeting with FISME delegation to seek our suggestions about incentives that could be devised for augmenting employment in the MSME sector. It is heartening that many of these suggestions propounded by FISME have found traction and an announcement can be expected soon. "

For the founder of Honest Tea, inspiration came at the grocery store. Dr. Barry Nalebuff, a professor at Yale School of Management, was just looking for a good glass of tea. While there were dozens of beverage options already in the marketplace, Nalebuff found water was boring, soda to be liquid candy, and diet drinks dangerous.

GDP growth for April-June was a modest seven per cent, compared to the January-March quarter of 2014-15.

Centre mulls minimum import price for steel products

With little respite in sight from burgeoning steel imports, the Centre is planning to fix the minimum import price for various steel products. The Steel and Commerce Ministries are working in close coordination, and the decision is expected to be announced in a few days, said sources close to the development. Steel prices have fallen sharply over the past few months and international steel companies are offering deep discount to capture Indian markets. CIBIL reports error prone; cause hardship to MSMEs

The Credit Information Bureau (India) Limited (CIBIL), which maintains the credit history of the borrowers for the financial institution, keeps sending varying and “incorrect” scores to the lenders hitting the businesses of the MSMEs badly. A bad CIBIL score takes away the chance of easy access to finance by the entrepreneurs as it is considered as the creditworthiness by most of the public as well as private sector lenders.

Germany's SME Story - Lessons for India: Report

The SME-led development of Germany is a unique and highly successful economic phenomenon that could serve as a model to promote trade and industry for emerging India, said a report by Institute for Small Enterprises and Development (ISED). A recent study by the International Monetary Fund (IMF,2015) has summarised India's challenges on the export front, in relation to some critical areas. Structural transformation depends not only on how much countries export, but also on what they export and with whom they trade. But, what do the SMEs, who contribute the bulk of India's exports, perceive? This is a critical issue for which a satisfactory answer is still begging.

HR Heuristics

Building a global brand in a globalized world

In a globalized world where technology has brought everyone from across geographies closer, it is easier and makes much more sense to operate on a global scale. When I started Rategain, it was a conscious decision to make it a global brand. From day one I was clear that my company would be a global brand and it was not some random decision. For anyone looking to be a global brand and viewing the world as their market, the following can prove to be helpful.

Finance Fundamentals

Small businesses make a beeline for Digital Loans

Small businesses in India have a crucial role to play because of their potential contributions towards the improvement of income circulation, employment creation, poverty reduction and the export growth and development of entrepreneurship, industry and rural economy. This sector is a key driver of our country's industrial growth as it comprises about 36 million enterprises that generate over 6,000 products and employ more than 106 million workers. Yet according to government estimates, only 4 percent of 57.7 million small business units in India have access to institutional finance, leaving many to rely on informal lenders.

Marketing Mantras

With exponential growth of technology, is traditional marketing dead?

Marketing as a principle to communicate the value of a product, service or brand to customers or consumers has been around from the very start of the civilization in one form or another. As the environmental factors evolve and technologies advance at an exponential rate, the marketing paradigm has shifted to newer more customer and content centric approaches being delivered on the digital platform.

Success Story

Engaging users through smart solutions

Raviteja Dodda and Yashwant Kumar co-founded DelightCircle, an app to help customers find discounts and other offers in stores near them. When the time came to scale up their business-to-consumer (B2C) venture, the duo realised high customer churn and uninstalls were a hindrance. They spoke to other app companies to see if they were doing things differently. They felt there was a gap in the market for a solution for app companies to retain and engage users.
