  The FISME Factor

President's Message
Dr. Sangam Kurade, President, FISME " For a nation that does not want to compete purely on labour costs, but wants to thrive on innovation and knowledge, having an effective framework for Intellectual Property is an absolute necessity. While India signed the IPR framework at WTO, a national guiding framework was missing. With the Union Cabinet approving the National IPR Policy, a long felt need is fulfilled. The speed of creation of new knowledge has accelerated tremendously. The IPR framework needs to be continuously upgraded. The Policy provides for creation of such an institutional set-up. It also aims to address many of the prevailing ills and vows to support MSMEs. What is particularly commendable is that the Govt. has not bowed down under pressure and refused ‘ever-greening’ of patents (a loop hole through which some companies keep getting their patents renewed/ extended infinitely citing incremental improvements). Through our three IP Facilitation Centers (Delhi, Bangalore and Hyderabad), it will be our endeavour at FISME, that benefits of the National IPR policy reach to MSMEs and start-ups. "

FISME presents MSMEs’ views before Defence Minister on selection of Strategic Partner

During a high-profile meeting called by Raksha Mantri Shri Manohar Parrikar to discuss the Atre Committee recommendations on selection of Strategic partners, FISME demanded that 60% procurement should be done from Indian vendors and at least 20% procurement from MSMEs. FISME delegation was led by Shri Anil Agarwal, Sr. Vice President. A new concept of Strategic partner in Defence procurement was mooted by the Dhirendra Singh Committee which was formed to review the defence procurement procedure. It involves identification and selection of Indian private sector defence manufacturers as “strategic partners” to develop “complex and strategic systems” within the country, or receive technology transferred from foreign suppliers in large defence contracts. Such systems could be aircrafts, ships, submarines etc.

Be kinder to yourself

Should you insist on sky-high standards and be ruthless about improving your product? Yup, but balance that drive with a little gentleness toward yourself. Starting up is hard, so you won't make it through unless you keep your spirits up, suggest several entrepreneurial veterans. "Mistakes will be made so don't beat yourself up over these but learn, adapt, move forward and persevere with your vision and those lessons learned," Liu reminds founders.
