  The FISME Factor

President's Message
Dr. Sangam Kurade, President, FISME " Defence sector has always been shrouded in mystery. Forget MSMEs, even India’s largest companies were seldom given an opportunity to leverage the prowess of their engineering capabilities in design and manufacturing for India’s defence needs. We have had the dubious distinction of being the largest importer of defence equipment- meeting 80% of our defence needs through imports, in the world for long! But now winds of change are blowing. First, Defence Procurement Procedures were re-tuned to allow private sector participation. Further, a for specific platforms strategic partnership has been mooted. FISME has been part of the process of dialogue and leveraging this to ensure MSMEs’ access to defence procurement. I have personally met the Defence Minister couple of times. We have now launched MSME Defence Suppliers’ Group to build capacities of MSMEs and bring the buyers and sellers together. It’s time MSMEs also contributed to nation building directly through partnerships in defence. "

Business Banter: Lessons from Entrepreneurs

The money is not the bottom line.

Many people start businesses for the money. But hopefully that’s not the only reason. Marie Forleo, founder of Marie TV and B-School, shared the secret of entrepreneurial success: “The money is not the bottom line. The people who I see that are the most successful -- there’s something deeper that drives them. There’s this strong burning desire to make a difference.”

Decoding India’s jobless growth

We often say that manufacturing should take greater responsibility of job creation as agriculture already employs over half of India’s workforce, and services can’t absorb the million youth who are joining it every month. The Centre is trying its best to push manufacturing through the Make in India initiative. But that doesn’t seem to be working, at least when it comes to job creation.

7 things to get right when working with parents in a family-run business

Succession in family businesses is a challenging issue; and the one critical milestone in this journey is "inducting the next generation into the business". When it is done well, it builds the right mindset and capabilities in the next generation. However, if it is done poorly, then it can take many years to recover from and sometimes, it can even lead to the demise of the enterprise. The induction is frequently driven from the perspective of the senior generation, as the younger generation is too inexperienced to have a point of view.

The first step to securing a loan is to get a basic level of homework done on what banks look for when giving out credit. Most of the information is available on the Internet and it would be a good starting point for any research.
